About us

Community Chest A nonprofit community health provider that serves the Black and Brown Youth of color in the Portland area. The idea is to teach youth how to take their health and wellness advocacy into their own hands and to let that knowledge permeate out to their families and broader communities, all in an effort to eliminate existing health disparities in Black communities and communities of color.

Our approach to providing health and wellness services is centered on the components of the health triangle:
· Physical · Mental/Emotional · Social

Our Programs

PHYSICAL HEALTH

We facilitate sports and athletics programs to help get Portland’s youth, especially in minority communities, out moving in the fresh air. Team sports also encourage collaboration and teamwork.

MENTAL & EMOTIONAL HEALTH

We create a safe space and offer one-on-one mentoring to build self confidence, as well as to offer support for the daily challenges youth face like change, grief, and institutional injustices like racism and homophobia.

SOCIAL HEALTH

We offer leadership training programs like the Youth Fair, as well as other events throughout the year that give youth the opportunity to collaborate with each other and practice leadership.

UTILIZING THE HEALTH TRIANGLE IN MULTNOMAH COUNTY

Community Chest Inc. empowers youth by utilizing the components of the health triangle, spreading awareness, teaching prevention, and promotion, with the intent to reach health and educational equality for Black and Brown Youth and low income communities in Multnomah County.

The Benefits

By engaging youth and their families in comprehensive health practices, we can reach health equity and lessen the impact of chronic diseases on our communities.

In 2015, 2.5 million people in Oregon had at least 1 chronic disease, and 1 million had 2 or more chronic diseases.

13,400 Oregonian’s lives could be saved annually through better prevention and treatment of chronic disease.

In Multnomah County, African-Americans are more than twice as likely as whites to die of diabetes.
African American and Native American individuals in Multnomah County are much less likely to have access to health insurance than whites.

Students who are happy, healthy and avoid risky behaviors are more likely to be successful in school.African-Americans face substantial disparities for health outcomes like diabetes, stroke, and lowbirth weight, and in health services like prenatal care, and mental health care.

Health Equity exists when all people can reach their full health potential and are not disadvantaged because of socially-determined circumstances.
